About the Sun Devil Winter Camp—and 2024 Camp Update
The vision for what is now the Sun Devil Winter Camp was hatched years ago. We wanted to provide the ultimate college golf preparation camp by giving a junior golfer a true simulated college golf experience. We thought it would be 8-12 campers, they would stay at Coach Thurmond’s house, and we would cover anything and everything college golf over 3-4 days while having a great team experience from early morning until late at night. All the other camps we saw were the same station-to-station routine, but this would be wildly different with the small size, coaches deeply connected in the instruction 24/7, and a full simulated team experience.
NCAA compliance denied our plan to have the camp at Coach’s house, but the principles of the camp would stay the same—small group, build deep connection with the coaches, teach key college-prep subjects, have a ton of fun, make it like a college golf team retreat, and provide the ultimate college golf preparation experience. Our hope was that anyone who attended the camp be ignited with a huge desire to play college golf, while being more prepared to be a great teammate and player when they do. Also of note: we have already recruited players from previous camps into our teams.
The first two years were a big success probably evidenced mostly by our Jan 3-6, 2024 Sun Devil Winter Camp filling up more than six months in advance with nearly zero marketing. Most sign-ups are those who attended the camp the two previous years, or their friends. Those looking for a fully immersed, connected, and comprehensive experience with college golf coaches and student-athletes will be attracted to this camp.
We love leading it and we put everything we have into it, giving the students our undivided attention from start-to-finish. We open up The Bird (Thunderbirds Golf Complex) completely to the students to make it their home for those four days. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind camp.
It is challenging to find the time in the schedule that is both out of the college golf season when the facility can be used for four days, that also avoids prime time for recruiting travel. We also want to host when weather is at least close to optimal. After exploring various options, we are thrilled to have found another great date, November 10-13, 2023. Friday, November 10 is a holiday and day off school for most and the college season will have just ended a week earlier. As such, the second Sun Devil Winter Camp is now open for sign ups! We hope to see the most passionate future college golfers sign up and join us in November!
